Earthquake emergency aid for Nijrala Secondary School

After the devastating earthquake in 2015, we are helping to rebuild the Nijrala Secondary School in the village of Purkot (Tanahu District).

In April 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, followed by a number of aftershocks. Almost 9,000 people lost their lives and over 22,000 were injured. Four out of five classrooms in the village school in Purkot in the Tanahu district were also completely destroyed. Through our local contacts, we helped to rebuild it and supported the teaching staff.

The first task was to help immediately: We distributed rice and dal in the village and worked together with the local NGO Pokhara United. Donations of materials were used to build replacement rooms in which the 270 children continued to be taught - even in the intense summer heat and monsoon rain.

In the long term, we then took care of the construction of new, earthquake-proof classrooms, which required around 30,000 euros in donations. This was supplemented by play equipment for the children, new water tanks and filters, as well as school lockers and benches. We also initiated a professional exchange with Waldorf teachers from Germany. The Nijrala Secondary School now specialises in handicrafts, horticulture and art.
